The Waco Tornado

Although this isn’t cool in the slightest, some weather history took place in this area in 1953. Many folks in the central parts of the United States, from north to south, can attest to the abundance of tornados that develop in their particular region. These beastly weather events destroy thousands of miles of land and infrastructure leaving nothing but chaos in their wake. Back in 1953, Waco experienced an F5 tornado that was the strongest of 33 tornados that formed from Minnesota to Texas in 2 days.

At this time, it still stands as America’s 11th deadliest tornado. With unstable air that came up from the golf, the time and temperature were just right to cook up a twister that killed 114 people. In addition to the Texas tornado, there were many other tornado events recorded all over the U.S. including South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Montana, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

This famous brand was created by Dr. Charles Alderton. It was introduced at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition or better known as the St. Louis World’s Fair. Dr. Alderton was from Brooklyn but made this right in Waco, Texas at a pharmacy/convenience store called Mason’s Old Corner Drug Store.

There’s said to be a secret recipe for the true Dr Pepper taste. There are rumors that the recipe is split in half and stored in separate places in Dallas. The true origins or perhaps more of the inspiration is never known because Dr. Alderton died unexpectedly before the release of the soda pop. Not saying there’s a mystery there but there may be a mystery there. There was even a debate as to spelling the name with or without the period after doctor. They finally decided on no period sometime in the 1950s.

Waco National Monument

A couple dozen thousand years ago, Columbian Mammoth traveled the Texas land. With wandering mammoths come fierce predators such as tigers, rhinos, and cheetahs. This exact excavation site in Waco has been kept for visitation and preservation. It remains the only recorded evidence of mammoth ice age herd movement in the United States. This preservation monument is open daily for normal business hours and has tours every 30 minutes. There is some education and you can view the bones of the species exactly where they were found, untouched since they were dug up in 1978. This included crimes that ranged from murder to political corruption. The Rangers were a paramilitary force that assisted in riot control and other protective services. They served the Republic (1836-1845) and the state of Texas.

Even today the Rangers are considered an essential part of Texan history. The Rangers continue to be an essential part of public safety with over 166 commissioned members of the Ranger force.
